Unlike many of the beaches in the United States, Michigan beaches are freshwater because they lay on a lake—Lake Michigan. Lake Michigan is one of the five Great Lakes. But what makes Lake Michigan different than the other Great Lakes is that it is located entirely within the borders of the United State. The other Great Lakes are shared with Canada.

The Beaches
The Great Lakes do not have any jellyfish or sharks. This means you have nothing to fear while swimming in the clear, dazzling water of Lake Michigan. • Grand Mere State Park. Grand Mere State Park is the perfect beach to retreat to for your vacation. With over a mile of Lake Michigan shoreline, this beach seems like it was created exclusively for swimming and sunbathing. Known for its magnificent sand dunes, this beach is a glorious find.

• Covert Park Beach and Campground. Are you bringing the family along on your Michigan beach vacation? Great! Covert Park Beach and Campground is the perfect place for a family getaway. Quite and rarely crowded, this park has a quarter of a mile of sandy beach for the whole family to enjoy during the day. And, at night, camp along the shoreline. Cover Park’s campground has 62 sites located in 50 acres of woodland. Park your RV or set up tent under the stars.

• Warren Dunes State Park. Located in southwestern Michigan, Warren Dunes States Park occupies 1,950 acres with three immaculate miles of shoreline. If observing breath-taking skylines in your thing, climb the tall dunes on this beach. Some of the sand and grass-covered dunes actually offer you a view of Chicago’s skyline, provided it is a clear day.

What Makes Michigan Beaches Different?
There are so many things that make a Michigan beach vacation different from all the other beach location around.

• Singing Sand. For example, have you ever heard of singing sand? While you are on vacation, enjoying the Michigan breeze, listening to the waves crash on the shore, and walking barefoot on the beach, you may start to wonder, “What is that strange squeaking sound that starts every time I step foot on the sand?” Well, that squeaking sound is known as “singing sand.” It is caused by strolling on the sand itself. You see, as one walks on the Michigan beach sand, that squeaking noise is made due to the high quartz content. Where else in the world do you have sand that sings?

• Petoskey stones. The other thing that makes a Lake Michigan beach vacation special are the interesting rocks, called Petoskey stones. Found on the beaches of North Michigan, Petoskey stones are simply rocks that are composed of fossilized coral. These stones are only found on the Michigan shoreline. In 1965, the Petoskey stone was named the state stone of Michigan.
